What Happened to Yesterday???

Today was a sad game.  The Yankees left 7 runners in scoring position with 2-outs those 7 runers would have put us up by 2 at the end of the game.  They left a combined 24 runners on base, that is just terrible!  AJ pitched a pretty good game with just one major blemish on his line, and that was a 3-run homer by Ian Kinsler (Who then hit another in the 8th off of Robertson).  It was just a very bad game pretty much all around for the Yankees.

Johnny Damon tries in vain to rob Ian Kinsler’s first homer of the game.

As I am writing this the Red Sox are losing 9-0 so I don’t think we need to worry about losing ground in the division, and now the Rangers can gain a game on the first place Sox.

I’m glad that Posada wasn’t scheduled to play today so he could give his injury some time to heal.  And today A-Rod was in the game so his slight injury scare yesterday doesn’t bother me anymore.

I’ve decided never to have a play of the game when the Yankees lose because, really, what’s the fun in that?

Perfect Pettitte

Ok well maybe I exaggerated a little he wasn’t “perfect” but it seemed that way.  Yes he gave up a run in the 5th and another in the 7th but the seventh was a quick, easy, and painless inning for the most part the 5th hurt a little more, but no pain no gain.

Today’s game was so much different than last night’s.  For instance last night the pitching was. . . well to put it lightly the pitching sucked.  Today the game was dominated by our pitching especially Andy.  But then again some of our pitching had a hard time getting outs or at least one did . . . **cough**bruney**cough cough**

Jack Nicholson and I shared the same face when Bruney came into the game.

I guess I much rather Girardi bring Bruney in during blowouts like today than 1-0 games at the end of September.  Cano made another play that made me want to hit the computer screen today when he dropped a cut-off throw which gave the Rangers an easy run by not making the throw home, but all is forgiven because for 1 the run probably would have scored anyways and 2 he went 2-4 with a run scored.

In fact every player with an at bat reached base at least once and the only player without a hit was Melky who reached on an error.

That explains Derek Hollands frustrations for the night!

With the Sox winning AGAIN and the Yankees beating the Rangers the Yankees still have a 6 game lead and the Sox have a 2.5 game lead on Texas.  Beating the Rangers makes me feel pretty bad because they are the main contenders with the Sox for the Wild Card and with us beating them we are actually HELPING the Red Sox, which is horrible, but the Yankees winning is amazing so I don’t care that much.

During the game two key players for the Yankees had injury scares:

A-Rod – Hit a foul ball off his toe in his at bat in the seventh and then dropped to the ground in pain, making Gene Monahan come racing out of the dug out, but after a brief chat it seemed that it was just a small scare.

Posada – Was it with a foul tip which was more like a foul line drive!  His glove hand was hit with this foul ball and it was forced backwards causing him to wince in pain and walk around a little, giving Monahan some more exercise time.  He jogged out of the dugout and looked at Posada’s hand.  Looked like a typical catcher’s injury you get hit, rub some dirt on it, and its all fine again, but oddly enough Posada was forced to leave the game which forced Molina to get his jogging in as well running all the way from the bullpen to the dugout (That took a while)

Both of these players will be key in the Yankees play off run!!! I hope neither affects them in ANY way at all or else it could spell disaster for the Bombers.  Happy Healings Posada and A-Rod!

PLAY OF THE GAME

Jorge Posada’s 2nd inning 3-run homer jump-started the offense in the game.

Close but not close enough

Yesterday was not great for Joba, he had a terrible inning and another so-so one in his 4 innings of work.  Then Chad Gaudin gave up another 3 runs all earned in his 3.2 innings.

In the ninth inning the Yankees came within a run of tying the game!  It was exciting until the last blown call by the umpire.  The Rangers shortstop, Elvis Andrus, caught the liner hit by Melky then doubled off Ramiro Pena on a clear missed call by the second base umpire.

Joba has been absolutely terrible in his last two starts and hasn’t been on his best game in all of August.  This is really worrying me because going down the stretch if we only have AJ and CC as pitchers that are dependable we are not in good shape!  With Andy, Joba,  and Gaudin/Mitre you never really know whats going to happen especially with the Gaudin and Mitre.  The Red Sox are picking up steam as we are finishing out the season and I don’t want them to have momentum in their favor when the playoffs start, nobody does really!  Hopefully all will be sorted out today when the Yanks play the Rangers again!

What Happened?!?

The once pitchers duel turned into a complete blowout for the Yankees.  Joba was not sharp today, the offense wasn’t on it’s best game, and the bullpen just blew up in our faces today.

The Yankees started the game’s scoring in the second inning on Derek Jeter’s record breaking double.  He now has 2,675 hits as a shortstop and 2,688 in his career (13 as DH).

But in the bottom of the inning Joba gave up 2 and gave up the lead.  Until in the third Nick Swisher hit a 2-run homer for the second night in a row.  But once again Joba decided to give up a 2 spot and the lead in the same inning.for the second time.  After that it all pretty much fell apart for the Yankees.  Two innings later the Mariners put up 5 runs making the score 9-4 before Kenji Johjima hit a homer to make the final score 10-4.

Also coming today is news that Hideki Matsui has a swollen left knee which could make him sit out the rest of the season, hopefully not!  And in  Robinson Cano’s lone at bat in the game he extended his hit streak to 14.

Even with the Yankees pathetic loss there was three positves:

1.  The Red Sox lost.  Thats always a plus.

2.  Jeter got the hit that surpassed Luis Aparicio for first on the all time short stop hit-list.

3.  And last but not least Nick Swisher hit his 20th Homer of the Season making it 5 straight seasons of 20+ homers for Nick.

PLAY OF THE GAME

Derek Jeter’s record breaking hit had to be the play of the game in this one even if the Yankees did lose.  I think whoever is in charge of putting those messages up on the scoreboard deserves to be smacked for not putting up anything on Jeter’s record that was pretty disappointing!  But it’s a record one way or another.  Congratulations, Derek Jeter on another milestone reached in a Hall of Fame Career!

Matsui probably out for the rest the Season

This is going to be a short post.  Hideki Matsui the Yankees’ DH is out indeffinitely with a swollen left knee.

His knees have been giving him problems for a couple years now.  Ever since he had that wrist injury vs. the Red Sox he has been injured more often than not.  Hopefully for the Yanks they don’t need Hideki for success.  Let’s just hope.

Right now it is a pitchers duel in the Yankees game and the Red sox are losing so  who knows what will happen.

Season highs and high fives.

Tonight was a good night!  Mitre ( Who by the way needs a haircut) had his best start of the season giving up just 1 earned run in 5.1 innings but he did leave the bases loaded with an out in the 6th inning for David Robertson, who then struck the first 2 batters he faced.  In fact all but 2 of the outs recorded by the bullpen were strike outs.  They were just lights out!

The offense was on early in the game scoring 4 runs in the 2nd inning but then they didn’t score aother run until Jeter’s blast in the 9th inning which made the score 5-2 which is where it would stay.  Mo came into the game for the save, his MLB leading 35th of the season he also recorded 2 K’s leaving him nine away from 1,000 in his career.

Another positive about today is that Molina went 2-3 (And threw out the speedy Ichiro at third to end a threaght) against lefty French today keeping himself hot against LHP which could make it easier for Joe to give some rest to Jorge.  And Robinson Cano’s hit streak is up to 13 games.

Also playing today was the Boston Red Sox against second place Texas Rangers.  And the Rangers crushed the Sox 7-2 pulling within .5 a game in the Wild Card once again.  The BoSox newly acquired Shortstop Alex Gonzalez went 0-fer 4 with a K and he grounded into a DP in his second Sox deput.  I’m pretty sure that’s not what the sox were looking for in this trade but, Hey, I’m not gonna complain!

Now the Yankees are a season high 31 games over .500,  7.5 games in first place, and they have the best record after the all star break of any Yankees team ever at 23-6.  Pretty good, huh?

On a different note, Where’s Michael Kay?  I know a lot of people don’t like him, but he’s my favorite broadcaster for the Yankees and I’m really missing him these last few days.  I don’t enjoy the other guys as much as him they just seem. . . boring!  I mean c’mon guys your team is starting to run away with the division,  they’re sweeping this series, everything is clicking and you guys are SOOO boring.  Well I guess I’ll stop ranting about this but you get my point.

PLAY OF THE GAME

Nick Swisher’s two run blast in the second inning to break the score open to 4-1.

Yankees comeback to win another one!

The game looked pretty bad from the start.  Andy Pettitte gave up 3 straight hits and 2 runs to start the ball game before settling down to finish the inning with limited damage.  Then to make matters worse the Yankees came back to score 6 runs in the 8th inning to win their game 8-4.

Yeah that was me before i starting using swagger from old spice

 (and before the Yankees won)

But then I realized something they are the Yankees and 2-0 leads are nothing for the Yankees.  Guess what happened next. . . the Yankees scored a run in the second on a fielders choice by Jerry Hairston Jr. then three innings later they scored another run on a Derek Jeter single scoring Melky Cabrera to tie the game.  What a surprise the Yankees coming back to tie the game!  Then in the 8th inning just when I was going crazy because the Yanks hadn’t scored again Big Teix crushes one out into right field and the Yankees are now up 3-2!

Not the same game, but has the same affect.

The Yanks added another run before the inning was over on a Nick Swisher bloop single to score Robby Cano who now has a 12-game hitting streak after his 9th inning double.  Then in the bottom of the 9th MO recorded his Major League leading 34th save of the season.

The Yankees are stuck in WIN mode and can’t get out and that’s the way I like it to be!  They’ve now won 4 games in a row and although that doesn’t seem like a lot it’s good enough for me.

So Are the Yankees the best team in the Majors right now? – Yes

Are they in first place in the East?-Yes

And um aren’t the Red Sox in SECOND place, 6.5 games below the Yankees?-
